Browsing the Berkeley Macintosh Users Group's 1988 Image Collection

July 3, 2025

Whenever I'm bored I'll load up the excellent Discmaster in my web browser and rummage around old CDs to see what I can find. Typically it's clip art or stock images that I save for random projects (like stickers or zines) but sometimes the disc is so packed full of goodies I save the entire disc.

One such CD-ROM is BMUG PD ROM Volume 1, a disc full of Mac software and art from 1988 from what I think is the Berkeley Macintosh Users Group. It was big enough to have its own Wikipedia page! Apparently they have a rivalry with the Boston Computer Society, lol. BMUG closed in 2000, declaring itself bankrupt. Its spirit lives on with the Silicon Valley MUG which is still active.

1988 is pretty early for CD-ROMs. In 1988 a CD-ROM for your Mac would cost almost as much as the Mac itself! Let's have a browse at some of the fun stuff :-)

Wasn't that a bit of fun? Thanks to Discmaster for making this stuff so easy to unearth. May it never disappear from the internet and be forever loading up on more discs to explore.
